Who Is Shelly Jan
My dad immigrated to Canada with 4 children in 1975, after my mother passed away when I was 5 years old. I was the first person in my immediate and extended family to attend University. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, obtained my Bachelor of Education and then completed my Master of Education. This is another first in my family for a Master’s Degree.
I was a teacher for a few years and then became involved in the Teacher’s union where I advocated for fair treatment for over 65,000 members. I know what it means to be accountable and fiscally responsible for spending other people’s money. I bring invaluable experience to the government in the education sector, in Health and Safety issues, in negotiating contracts and in policy and constitutional development. I worked in the health care system, with young offenders and with seniors. I have developed programs, and participated in other outreach programs for youth, children, those living in poverty and with the homeless. I continue to mentor and empower women, encouraging them to rise to positions of decision making where they can make a difference.
I have organized and coordinated numerous humanitarian trips designed to meet specific needs in a variety of communities over the past decade. These trips always make me more thankful and grateful for what I have and to appreciate what we have in Canada, free education and free health care, to name a few.
I have faced many challenges growing up from racism to sexism and have overcome the situations that I have faced. Because I was the underdog, I had to try harder, persevere and be better than those around me to get where I am today.
I am proud to be a Conservative member. As an advocate, my door is always open to you. I am here to be your voice and to serve the people of Langley.
